GES Introduces Two-Day Mid-Term Breaks for Public Basic Schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) and public schools in Ghana are not traditionally known for observing mid-term breaks. In cases where breaks do occur, they typically do not last beyond a day and are not officially recognized as mid-term breaks. Usually, only learners benefit from these short breaks, while teachers continue with their duties.
When such breaks are necessary, it is often because teachers are attending refresher courses or workshops to build their Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points.
GES Introduces Two-Day Mid-Term Breaks for Public Basic Schools as a New Policy Under Daniel Fenyi’s Leadership
With the appointment of Mr. Daniel Fenyi as Head of Public Relations, GES has announced a significant change. Public basic schools will now enjoy a two-day mid-term break in each term. This initiative aims to improve the well-being of both learners and teachers.
However, GES has not yet disclosed the exact dates for these mid-term breaks. It is expected that dates will be announced at the beginning of each term to enable headteachers and teachers to inform parents through the learners.
Lessons from the 2024/2025 Academic Year
During the second term of the 2024/2025 academic year, GES declared a break for learners to allow teachers to attend a training and conference as part of their professional development. Unfortunately, this announcement was communicated late, after schools had already closed. This created confusion, as some learners reported to school only to discover it was a break day. Teachers and learners both deserve rest; hence, these midterms, if implemented and seperated from the teacher development traning breaks will go a long way to help teachers as well.

Improved Communication from GES
The proactive communication strategy from GES under the leadership of Mr. Daniel Fenyi is highly commendable. His efforts have significantly bridged the communication gap that existed in the past. It is hoped that this will continue to help disseminate critical information to schools, teachers, headteachers, parents, and the general public in a timely and effective manner.
