ASUU Awards Scholarships To Students In Ibadan

ASUU awards scholarships to students in Ibadan worth around 1.1 million Naira amid alleged maltreatment new. 

The University of Ibadan chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities provided scholarships to chosen university students. Dr Adefemi Afolabi, Chairman of ASUU, University of Ibadan, cites major grounds for the development at a congress convened by the union in the university.

The scholarship was funded by two major union chieftains and a senior professor of the university’s Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies.

Ibadan, Oyo State. The University of Ibadan Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities stated that its commitment to making education available to all willing but needy students is why it established a scholarship opportunity for some of the university’s destitute students.

The UI Chapter of ASUU stated that it established a scholarship opportunity in order to make education available to all interested students.
According to Legit.ng, the Union offered N1.1 million in scholarships to eleven poor students to help them with their academic endeavors for the current 2024/2025 academic session.

Speaking at the award ceremony held at the ASUU-UI Secretariat, located at the University’s Ajibode Extension, Dr. Adefemi Afolabi, University of Ibadan Chairman of ASUU, stated that the union is committed to assisting indigent students. Despite the ongoing challenges faced by the academic community.

These challenges include delayed salaries and stalled negotiations with the federal government. Dr. Afolabi outlined the selection method, stating that over 100 pupils applied, and only 11 were deemed most deserving of the honor.

“We have been running this (award) for some time. After you have gone through the rigorous screening, we believe that you have been found worthy of the award. I congratulate all of you. You should aim for having first-class, nothing stops you. In the next 10 years, you can come back to academia, not necessarily in Nigeria, but in any part of the world, for the love of academia and for the love of imparting knowledge,” Afolabi added.

The beneficiaries were chosen following a thorough screening and interview procedure undertaken by the ASUU selection committee.

The scholarships were awarded in three categories: the National Secretariat of ASUU, ASUU-UI, and Professor Tajudeen Akanji of UI’s Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies, a notable ASUU member.

The ASUU National body rewarded two students ₦200,000 each, the UI branch awarded five students ₦100,000 each, and Professor Tajudeen Akanji, a union member, sponsored four students with ₦50,000 each.
